I’ve been used Linux for the very first time in my PC was in 2007. My first Linux distribution was Mandriva One 2007. Now, Linux has been 25 years old. There are so many improvement have been reached by its community. There are huge changes and today we could meet Linux in almost every devices, from our personal computer, into our smartphones (yes, Android is a Linux). Also, talking about Linux desktop, there are bunch of Linux distros exists today –though, based on some statistics, Linux desktop still get very little portion in personal computer market share. There are new Linux distro born, and there are some legendary Linux distro, sadly became unmaintained.  From my personal point of view, I have my own criteria about ‘a perfect’ Linux distro. Since GNOME turned into their own way, many Linux users have switched into another traditional desktop. There are very good choices, but in the end, leaves two winning "Best Traditional Linux Desktop" : XFCE and MATE . Both of those desktops have grown into a mature, polished, rock solid and "functional and efficient" traditional Linux desktop. And the question is, which is better ? To get the answer, I made the tables of feature comparison between XFCE and MATE as follows : 1. Basic Features 2. Special Features And what're the conclusions ? The conclusions are up to you. [Unetbootin running on Windows 7] Several years ago, I remember, every time I need a newer Ubuntu release, automatically I have to purchase one blank CD to burn the newer Ubuntu iso. And every six months, I did the same thing. Again and again. That was before I met Unetbootin , a wonderful simple application to create a Linux LiveMedia using USB stick drive. And now, almost every Linux distro provides a LiveMedia with size bigger than single CD fit (700 MB), and Unetbootin is the easiest, cheapest and the most briliant way to boot Linux LiveMedia. So many people always complain about why do Ubuntu has so many bugs. As a long-time Ubuntu user, in one side, I agree with those, but in overall, my standpoint is still unchanged and maybe will never be : I always satisfied enough by using Ubuntu Linux. Untuk urusan memutar mp3, di Linux sudah terdapat banyak pilihan aplikasi yang selain mampu memutar dengan sempurna, juga memiliki fitur-fitur yang sangat lengkap, sebagai contoh adalah AmaroK, dan Exaile. Pun jika kita menyukai pemutar mp3 ala Winamp, di Linux kita bisa mendapati XMMS dan Audacious, yang memang didesain sangat mirip dengan Winamp. Namun, bagi kita yang notabene merupakan “veteran” pengguna OS Windows, kadang masih suka teringat dengan nostalgia lama dengan aplikasi-aplikasi Windows, seperti Winamp (yang sudah sangat melegenda). Lalu karena hal itu, saya mencoba menginstalasi Winamp dengan Wine. Sistem yang saya pakai adalah Ubuntu 8.04 dan Wine 1.00 dan Winamp 5.22. Perkembangan versi terbaru dari suatu desktop dan software dalam lingkungan Linux tidak terjadi dalam jangka berapa bulan atau tahun, tapi tiap hari. Di lingkup teknis sistem operasi Microsoft Windows , kita mengenal pemaketan software berbasis single installer dengan esktensi *.exe . Pun juga di lingkup sistem operasi Mac OS X, yang menggunakan sistem pemaketan software yang hampir sama, dengan ekstensi *.dmg . Di Linux, sistem pemaketan software terasa lebih complicated . Seringkali dalam banyak contoh, ketergantungan suatu paket software desktop Linux jumlahnya sangat banyak. Satu paket software membutuhkan puluhan paket s oftware yang lain. Salahsatu ciri khas dari sistem operasi berbasis UNIX adalah adanya File Permission . Setiap file mempunyai atribut dari si pembuat / pemilik file. Nampak rumit, dan bagi saya juga terasa rumit :D Satu kerumitan itu adalah manakala kita meng- copy file dari CD/DVD ke hardisk, file hasil copy tersebut beratribut Read Only . Walhasil, kita tidak akan bisa menghapus file tersebut sebelum kita merubah permission-nya menjadi read-write via terminal dengan hak akses root. Nah, mengenai hal tersebut, saya pernah mengalami kejadian paling konyol dan menjengkelkan. Alkisah, pada suatu waktu, saya meng- copy sebuah DVD (bukan me- ripp ). Nah, setelah saya selesai menonton DVD dari hasil copy -an tersebut, saya berniat menghapusnya dengan cara memindahkannya ke trash , sementara saya belum me- chmod permission -nya. Apa yang terjadi? Trash tidak bisa dikosongkan!! Arghhhh ! Saya bingung kalang-kabut. Saya coba akses trash dari terminal, dan saya ketik : $ cd trash...

Alkisah, dulu sekali (sekitar 2006), yaitu ketika saya masih menggunakan 'OS Jendela', saya sangat menyukai sebuah aplikasi PDF Viewer bernama Foxit Reader . Keunggulan aplikasi tersebut tentu saja adalah karena sangat ringan sekali, bahkan ketika saat itu dijalankan dikomputer Pentium 500 MHz saya. Dan juga, walaupun ringan, fitur daripada aplikasi Foxit Reader adalah sangat lengkap, sama sekali tidak kalah bila dibandingkan dengan aplikasi sejenis yang sudah sangat melegenda, Adobe Reader. Oleh karena hal tersebut, pada zaman-zaman OS Jendela masih menguasai komputer saya, Foxit Reader menjadi aplikasi andalan dan kebanggan saya. Saya sering mempromosikan aplikasi tersebut kepada rekan-rekan saya yang lain. Nah, karena suatu kebetulan, ternyata saya menemukan juga bahwa Foxit Reader telah ada versi Linux-nya! Horeeeeeey !! gMusicBrowser bawaan Zenwalk 5.2 yang buggy Beberapa waktu yang lalu saya mencoba menginstalasi Zenwalk 5.2 GNOME. Secara keseluruhan, desktop linux berbasis Slackware ini sangat oke. Di usung dengan GNOME 2.22, dekstop ini terasa sangat cepat di komputer saya. Aplikasi-aplikasi yang disertakan pun lumayan, walau saya harus menambah sendiri OpenOffice.org 3.0. Dari beberapa aplikasi yang by default disertakan ada satu yang cukup menarik perhatian saya, yaitu gMusicbrowser. Sekilas mirip sekali dengan aplikasi music manager amaroK, namun setelah saya coba beberapa kali, ternyata aplikasi tersebut (yang disertakan dalam Zenwalk 5.2), masih cukup buggy . Selalu saja ada error yang sama setiap kali saya menjalankan musik dengan gMusicbrowser yaitu setelah menjalankan lagu beberapa track , aplikasi ini akan berhenti memutar lagu selanjutnya.
