I could not play MP3s on my Linux system . That was the first challenge I have to deal in my very first experience with Linux. At the time, almost every major Linux distributions did not support proprietary multimedia formats by default. You have to install the additional codecs to be able to play your multimedia collection. But then I met this beautiful app called XMMS. It was a great music player, originally created to resemble the same functionality and interface to the popular Windows' Winamp.  Later, XMMS forked into more modern apps. The first fork was Beep Media Player that built on GTK2 technology. Not long, BMP was discontinued and the existing code then forked again to the currently surviving Audacious Music Player. Of course, there are a lot media players on Linux you can rely on. Even, major Linux distros now support proprietary multimedia formats by default. What an odd, after many years I remember an old, an ancient app called KompoZer. It was a handy WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web editor to create HTML web page. Originally, it was a fork, a refinement for an abandoned app called Nvu. But later, KompoZer was also abandoned, following the rise of more dynamic and interactive web development technology. However, it is still usable for us to create a simple web page and I decide to build an AppImage version, based on Ubuntu Precise repository. If you are interested to feel the nostalgia, you could download the KompoZer AppImage from this following URL: KompoZer-0.8.glibc2.15-x86_64.AppImage The packages is built upon Ubuntu 12.04 repository and I've successfully tested it on my Ubuntu 22.04. Mandriva was my favorite daily driver Linux distribution, alongside Ubuntu. It was, probably the best looking Linux distro ever existed. I adore the beauty of the Mandriva artwork.  Recently I found a Mandriva One 2010 iso in my Linux iso collection, and quickly tempted to rock it on VirtualBox. I still amazed by the beauty, so I extract the wallpapers and use it on my desktop to recall my sweet memories with this very nice distribution. Youtube is now become a major, most viewed, free video streaming website in the universe. It is complete, mobile, and rich featured, including subtitle/caption. And then, there is a simple question, how to download Youtube subtitle/caption in Linux? Apparently, there is an application called Google2SRT . It is officialy a Ms. Windows application, but thanks to the developer it's built with Java so it's mobile and could be ran in any other operating system using JVM (Java Virtual Machine). For the sake of ease, I've been 'ported' the application into Linux (.deb), and could be easily installed in any Debian based Linux distribution. Here are the steps to install : 1. Download the package HERE . 2. Install the dependency : sudo apt-get install icedtea-plugin 3. Install the package : sudo dpkg -i google2srt_0.7.4_all.deb 4. Just copy and paste the Youtube URL, press Go.

To play music, there are many choices now in Linux. But as I've tried those stuffs, from Amarok, gMusicBrowser, Rhythmbox, Banshee to Clementine, I found that the best is XMMS in sound quality. Yes, it's an obsolete app. Even we can call it "an ancient app" from the ancient world. It uses an ancient technology gtk+1.2, but strangely, it has very great sound quality : Clear in the Treble, Soft in the Bass, But, how and where we could get this app and install it onto our current, newer Linux distro ? I know, even the libraries for this app is not available anymore in any current Linux software repository. And so, I share my collection to you HERE . Playlist M ain Window Preferences Window In Linux world, there are many Media Player today. But for me, I've had my own choice : SMPlayer. It is a Qt based front-end for Mplayer, the (probably) greatest media player in Linux. By default, SMPlayer is capable to play almost all media format exist today. With w32codecs, it will be the perfect one ! Also, now, SMPlayer has already supported Mplayer2 (the next generation of Mplayer). It is better than VLC, and it is far more better than Totem. Meanwhile, there is an icon theme that has been very popular in Linux desktop named Faenza Icon Theme. It is a simple but elegant, squared icon theme created by Tiheum. It is indeed a great decision, but there are many enterprise users who need standardized system to simplify their enterprise technical management. Because of this reason, then Mozilla made a new decision to create a new branch of their Firefox browser that named Extended Support Release (ESR). This is similar to Long Term Support of Ubuntu release, but apparently Ubuntu doesn't facilitate this branch so we are Ubuntu users won't get ESR version of Firefox from Ubuntu's official repository. MATE Desktop Environment 1.2.2 On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS [click to enlarge] MATE Desktop Environment has been growing popular. In the earlier version, I found that this Gnome 2 Fork was messy, absoulutely unstable and wasn't ready yet for everyday computing. So do in the 1.2 version for Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot, I found this DE was still unstable, especially if I used Ubuntu Ambiance theme, the desktop will be crashed (panel lost etc). I almost gave this DE up until I got a suprise when I took an experiment with MATE 1.2.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This Destkop is amazingly quite stable and ready to use for now. Even, we can use Ubuntu Ambiance theme with no problem. But, to be known, we can't just use official Ubuntu Ambiance theme for MATE. Lubuntu 12.04 with Mac OS X Lion Theme, xcompmgr & cairo-dock [click to enlarge] Mac OS X is the special one in the Desktop market. Today, there are so many games that support Linux natively. Even, there are some high quality and high level 3D games now come to Linux world. But, is there any native Soccer (Football) game in Linux? I could say : not much yet! One of the today existed Soccer game in Linux is named Yoda Soccer . A cute and interactive soccer game for Linux :) As usual, as an Ubuntu user, I packed the game into a debian package so I could install it easily in the future with ease. QMMP is a great Winamp Like music player. For me, this is the greatest current living Winamp Like Music Player in Linux (Audacious seems to be more “gtk” interfaced music player than classic winamp). This is based on QT but works smooth and fast enough in gtk based desktops (lxde, xfce, gnome). For you that don't know yet what is QMMP, this is a popular app and installable easily by apt in Ubuntu and or Debian (squeeze, wheezy, sid) : sudo apt-get install qmmp Because of this, I decided to pack some cool Winamp classic skins to be a Debian package to fullfil the lack of additional skins in default QMMP installation. Angry Birds Rio is a spin-off of the new-legendary game Angry Birds. This plot is specially taken from popular animation film Rio, an adventure of a pet Blue macaw bird from US in Brazilian jungle. Based on that successful film, there are some game developers created a spin-off for Angry Birds game called Angry Birds Rio. The good news about this is, there is already a flash version of this game so we could play it in Linux desktop easily using flashplayer (standalone player, or by Internet Browser with flashplayer plugin). And just like what I've done before in Angry Animals game, I've packed this game too into Debian package so we could install it with ease. Angry Birds is a new legendary game. It came first in iOS world and then spread widely into another Operating Systems. If we use Windows, we could get this game easily (there is already a Windows version). For Linux users, we could also install it easily using Wine. The native Linux version is not presented yet so we should be patient for this :) But apparently, there is a game developer Flashninjaclan has developed an Angry Birds clone flash game and could be played easily in any browser and in any operating system, using adobe flashplayer plugin. There is a very popular multimedia format called Shockwave (with swf file format). This is an awesome format that we could use it to make a lightweight video tutorial or, commonly used to build a lightweight but rich and interactive game called flashgame. To play swf, we need an software called flashplayer. And there are two version of flashplayer : (1) Flashplayer browser plugin that works with Internet Browsers like Firefox, Google Chrome and IE; (2) Flashplayer Standalone. This is a standalone software (with window and menus) to open swf files. The easier way to play swf is by Internet Browser with flashplayer plugin, but that is little less elegant and little more heavy than using Standalone Player.
