In 8 April 2016, MATE Desktop 1.14 has been released. Based on Ubuntu MATE website , this version brings some improvement, such as follows : Improved GTK+3 support across the entire MATE Desktop. Full GTK 3.20 support in all MATE themes. Client Side Decorated applications render correctly in all themes. Completely ported MATE System Monitor and Mozo to GTK+3 only. Touchpad configuration now supports edge and two-finger scrolling independently. Python extensions in Caja can now be managed separately. All three window focus modes are selectable. MATE Panel now has the ability to change icon sizes for menubar and menu items. MATE NetSpeed Applet has been merged into the MATE Applets package. MATE Terminal support VTE 2.91 API when built for GTK+3. Volume and Brightness OSD can now be enabled/disabled. Translations are updated. Thank you to our team of translators! Sweet Memory Back in my old days, I had been using Fedora Linux 7 alongside Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. My personal reason why I used to be a Fedora user is because of its default theme. A blue, simple, gorgeous theme called Nodoka, one of the best theme ever made. With the rebirth and the rise of MATE Desktop , I'm really curious to try Nodoka theme in MATE desktop, and amazingly, the theme works perfect. And so I present you a Ubuntu package port of Fedora's Nodoka theme here and I call it nodoka-theme-mate . Installation Download the tarball, extract it, and install the debs with command sudo dpkg -i *.deb Download Download the tarball HERE . Since GNOME turned into their own way, many Linux users have switched into another traditional desktop. There are very good choices, but in the end, leaves two winning "Best Traditional Linux Desktop" : XFCE and MATE . Both of those desktops have grown into a mature, polished, rock solid and "functional and efficient" traditional Linux desktop. And the question is, which is better ? To get the answer, I made the tables of feature comparison between XFCE and MATE as follows : 1. Basic Features 2. Special Features And what're the conclusions ? The conclusions are up to you. I've been using both and I feel satisfied. Personally, I slightly tend to choose XFCE. How about you folks ? :D

Finally “Stable” MATE Desktop has reached version 1.4.2. It brings some improvements and for me, it now runs far far more stable than its previous versions when I tested it on the Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal. All good but still, we can't use the original default Ubuntu's Ambiance theme in MATE. And so, just for fun (but finally working good) I made a fork of Ubuntu's Ambiance Theme dedicated for MATE desktop and I called it Matembiance Theme. Installation Download the deb HERE , and install it manually by terminal or by gdebi : sudo dpkg -i matembiance-theme_2012.12_all.deb

MATE Desktop Environment is now (when I wrote this) reached version 1.4. But it still lands with one incompatibility issue with the Ubuntu's Ambiance theme. Yes, we still can't use the original Ambiance theme in MATE and so I felt called to arrange an Ambiance theme specialized for the MATE Desktop. Originally, I just use a theme created for the LXDE and XFCE called Ambiance & Radiance For Xfce & LXDE from this gnome-look . What I did was just created the index.theme and now I can see the most elegant theme in Linux in my MATE Desktop. Download ambiance-mate_12.04_all.deb Installation Execute the deb by terminal : sudo dpkg -i *.deb Open preferences by right clicking at MATE Desktop Select Ambiance MATE Done Additional This theme looks better with Faenza-Icon-Theme .

MATE Desktop Environment 1.2.2 On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS [click to enlarge] MATE Desktop Environment has been growing popular. In the earlier version, I found that this Gnome 2 Fork was messy, absoulutely unstable and wasn't ready yet for everyday computing. So do in the 1.2 version for Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot, I found this DE was still unstable, especially if I used Ubuntu Ambiance theme, the desktop will be crashed (panel lost etc). I almost gave this DE up until I got a suprise when I took an experiment with MATE 1.2.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This Destkop is amazingly quite stable and ready to use for now. Even, we can use Ubuntu Ambiance theme with no problem. But, to be known, we can't just use official Ubuntu Ambiance theme for MATE. Since included by default in Linux Mint 12 DVD, Mate Desktop Environment (MATE) has amazingly accepted by many Linux users. Even, many programmers has joined into this project and take part developing MATE. And now, there is an “official” homepage of MATE which can be found at mate-desktop.org . There are wiki, blog, installation manual and of course : repository. Based on its Release Notes, there is already MATE 1.2 released and I've tried it in my Ubuntu 11.10. This is my conclusion about MATE 1.2 : The Good More more stable than previous releases. Mate Panel looks great just exactly like Gnome 2 panel.
