Lebih Cepat, Lebih Baik



Ini sama sekali bukan iklan, atau latah. Isu antara performance dan appearance dalam komputasi selalu hangat dan selalu ada dua tipe user yang secara ekstrem memilih pendekatan keduanya, kecepatan atau responsivitas sistem dan keindahan interface grafis (desktop) sistem.


Saya sendiri, sebenarnya perfeksionis. Andai bisa, saya sangat mengingikan sebuah sistem dengan interface grafis seindah mungkin dengan kinerja sistem yang cepat dan responsif. Sebenarnya keduanya dapat dicapai, cuma tentu saja dengan upgrade hardware yang lumayan.


Berhubung hardware yang saya punya pas-pasan, saya mencoba menyeimbangkan keduanya. Tema-tema tambahan dari GNOME-LOOK atau UBUNTU-ART sudah sangat mencukupi untuk 'memoles' interface desktop Gnome saya menjadi indah. Sekarang saya tinggal membuat desktop Gnome lebih responsif. Caranya sederhana sekali.


Bagian yang membuat desktop Gnome terasa lambat adalah efek minimize yang menurut ungkapan banyak user 'ugly', atau jelek atau tidak nyaman. Yang jelas, efek minimize Gnome ini terasa desktop menjadi tidak respomsif. Untuk men-disable efek tersebut, sangat mudah. Kita hanya perlu masuk ke editor konfigurasi desktop Gnome (gconf).


Caranya, pertama masuk ke editor konfigurasi gconf-editor, dengan menekan run (Alt+F2), dan ketik 'gconf-editor'. Kedua, masuk ke 'Applications>Metacity>General', kemudian centang pilihan 'reduced_resources'. Terakhir, tutup jendela gconf-editor, dan sekarang desktop Gnome kita terasa lebih responsif tanpa minimize efek (yang 'ugly'). ^_^

How To Speed Up Your KDE Plasma Desktop (KDE4)

KDE is one of the oldest desktop environment in Linux. While GNOME (the other desktop that as old as KDE) is trying to built its own style of user interface, KDE from the beginning seems to mimics the Microsoft Windows' "classic" user interface. Thus, KDE has its own user base, especially for them who still in love with the Windows' philosophy : a simple desktop, with a single taskbar in the bottom, and a start menu in the left.
