Ke Sekolah Dengan Edubuntu

Salah satu tema distribusi Linux saat ini adalah pendidikan. Banyak sekali distribusi Linux yang didesain untuk fungsi edukasi. Salah satu ditribusi yang terkenal untuk itu adalah Edubuntu. Varians dari distro kondang ubuntu ini, memang didesain dengan berbagai macam aplikasi yang sangat berguna untuk dunia pendidikan.
Edubuntu 8.04, seperti versi sebelumnya, hadir dengan aplikasi-aplikasi pendidikan. Jika kita mendownload Edubuntu, atau pun memesan dari shipit.ubuntu.com, kita akan mendapat CD installer, bukan LiveCD Installer seperti CD Ubuntu. Jadi, kita tidak bisa menikmati LiveCD Edubuntu. Apa yang beda dengan ubuntu? Tidak ada sama sekali! Bedanya hanya Edubuntu dibundel dengan aplikasi pendidikan, dan tampilan desktopnya.
Untuk kita yang telah menginstal desktop Ubuntu 8.04 di PC atau notebook kita, kita bisa menambah aplikasi pendidikan yang ada di Edubuntu ke desktop ubuntu kita dengan sangat mudah. Langkahnya sangat sederhana :
1.masukan CD Installer Edubuntu 8.04 (disebut juga CD Add-On Edubuntu 8.04)
2.tunggu beberapa saat
3.muncul menu autoplay, dengan pilihan : tolak, masuk software manager synaptic, dan masuk menu Add-On CD
4.pilih masuk menu Add-On CD
5.setelah masuk menu Add-On CD, centang semua aplikasi tambahan yang ada, termasuk paket desktop Edubuntu (jika kita ingin tampilan desktop ubuntu kita menjadi tampilan desktop Edubuntu)
6.aplly, tunggu proses instalasi
7.selesai, buka Gnome menu, dan akan ada menu baru pendidikan dengan aplikasi pendidikan yang cukup mumpuni.
Aplikasi apa saja yang ada di Edubuntu?
1.QCad
Kloning dari AutoCAD. Sangat bagus untuk mendesain 2D.
2.Inkscape
Kloning dari CorelDraw. Sangat bagus untuk desain vektor 2D.
3.Kino
Video editor Linux yang sangat mumpuni.
4.KDEedu
Paket pendidikan KDE, terdiri dari beberapa aplikasi seperti KStars, Kazaam, dll. Sangat bagus untuk pendidikan dasar dan menengah. Sangat mendidik dan menarik.
5.Scribus
Kloning dari Publisher. Sangat bagus untuk desain majalah, koran dan sejenisnya.
Dan juga masih ada beberapa aplikasi pendidikan lain yang belum sempat saya explore. Selain aplikasi pendidikan, ada aplikasi grafis yang sangat saya senangi keberadaannya, yaitu GPaint. GPaint adalah kloning Ms.Paint versi Gnome. Kalau dulu saya senang dengan kolourpaint, ternyata di lingkungan Gnome ada GPaint. Sangat berguna dan praktis untuk editing gambar sederhana. Saya sangat menyukainya.
Secara keseluruhan, desktop Edubuntu 8.04 sudah mumpuni untuk dunia pendidikan, dan juga memuaskan bagi saya. Semakin meningkatkan nilai jual Ubuntu. Walau ubuntu sendiri tidak dijual secara komersial.

How To Speed Up Your KDE Plasma Desktop (KDE4)

KDE is one of the oldest desktop environment in Linux. While GNOME (the other desktop that as old as KDE) is trying to built its own style of user interface, KDE from the beginning seems to mimics the Microsoft Windows' "classic" user interface.
